 Info:

  • These are two heavyweight sides, one led by the greatest run-maker in IPL T20 history and the other led by one of the greatest batsmen the IPL has ever seen. Virat Kohli, the leading run scorer in the competition with 5878 runs, captains RCB; with Rohit Sharma, in fourth place on the all-time list with 5230 runs and four away from equalling MS Dhoni’s appearance record of 204, captaining the holders.
  • Both teams have other homegrown stars in their ranks. Mumbai Indians boast the Pandya brothers, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Whereas in the RCB corner, they have Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal and Mohammed Siraj.
  • But the IPL would not be the same without its international stars and there will be plenty of top global players fighting for selection for both sides. Mumbai Indians have Trent Boult with the ball, Quinton de Kock with the gloves (although he will be absent for this clash), Jimmy Neesham and Kieron Pollard. For RCB, their squad has the quality of Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers and the most expensive New Zealand player in IPL history – Kyle Jamieson.

 Toss Predictions
As with the India v England T20I series last month, we expect either Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma to elect to field first if they win the toss.

 Weather & Pitch Report
⛅ Weather:
It will be 29 degrees when the game gets underway and as with earlier in the day there will be very little cloud cover.
🏟️ Pitch:
Games in Chennai have historically favoured the sides with the strongest slow bowling attack. We expect the surface to once again be conducive to spin.

 Team NEWS:

 Mumbai Team News:
Quinton de Kock will be a miss for Mumbai Indians as he not only keeps wickets but also opens the batting alongside Rohit Sharma. We expect Ishan Kishan to come in for de Kock in IPL 2021 opener after he took to international cricket like a duck to water, winning the player of the match award after a 32-ball 56 on his T20I debut last month.

 Bangalore Team News:
RCB’s emergence as a force in last year’s tournament was great to see after their previous three campaigns had delivered finishes in 8th, 6th and 8th. As ever, a lot will depend on how many runs Virat Kohli can rack up.

 MI Key Players:

 Rohit Sharma:
Not only does he have the bulk of IPL runs and appearances behind him, but Rohit has also led Mumbai Indians to each of their five titles. He is level with his opposite number in third place on the all-time IPL fifties list, both with 39 to their name.

 Kieron Pollard:
Trinidad’s current cricketing star has been lighting up the IPL every year since 2010. He has amassed 164 appearances, all for Mumbai Indians, and is four sixes away from bringing up his double century. In 2016, he hit a 17-ball half-century against KKR.

 Trent Boult:
The smiling assassin goes about his business in a likable manner, full of the understated charm we have come to expect from New Zealand players. Boult took 3-30, including the wicket of Marcus Stoinis from the first ball of the game, on his way to taking the player of the match award in last year’s final.

 RCB Key Players:

 Virat Kohli:
Undoubtedly India’s number one player and all-time IPL record run scorer, players don’t come any more crucial to a side than RCB’s captain. If he can improve on last year’s return of three half-centuries then his team will be a real contender.

 AB de Villiers:
The South African continues to wow TV viewers around the globe with his sweet timing, power hitting and innovation in this form of the game. He has the third highest IPL individual score in history, 133* against Mumbai Indians in 2015, and a repeat of that could be just what RCB and the tournament requires.

 Glenn Maxwell:
Australia’s all-rounder has done the rounds of a few IPL franchises and duly signed for RCB for this year’s competition after they fought off CSK in a bidding war. He played the 2013 IPL for Mumbai Indians and may well have a point to prove.

 Team Forms:

 MI Team Form:
They are the most successful side in the history of the IPL and only seem to be getting better. Can anyone stop them making it three titles in three years?.

 RCB Team Form:
Although they qualified for the play-offs after finishing the previous campaign in last position, RCB ended the 2020 IPL with five successive defeats.
